Research Grants
The Eagle ILF Program provides grant funds to advance new mitigation methods for eagles. These funds are not related to federal permits but are intended develop new compensatory mitigation methods for potential use in federal eagle permitting.
Methods must demonstrate quantifiable conservation benefits to bald eagles and/or golden eagles such that a resource equivalency analysis can be used to generate the number of eagles credited back into the eagle population as a direct result of the mitigation actions. We encourage interested parties to have initial conversations about their research ideas with US Fish and Wildlife Service prior to contacting the Eagle ILF Program about funding.
Mitigation could address known causes of mortality including:
Vehicle collision
Power pole electrocution
Shooting
Poisoning
Trap by-catch
Disease
Starvation
Based on USFWS assessment of golden eagle mortality and injury data (Millsap et al 2022 https://doi.org/10.1002/eap.2544).
